Vancouver International Airport (IATA: YVR, ICAO: CYVR), which is on Sea Island in Richmond, British Columbia, is an international airport that serves the city of Vancouver and the Lower Mainland area.It is located 12 km (7.5 mi) from downtown Vancouver.
History Vancouver International Airport
In 1929, the City of Vancouver bought land on Sea Island to replace the grass airstrip at Minoru Park on Lulu Island. This land was used for aviation.During World War II, the airport and its original terminal, now the South Terminal, were leased to the federal government and operated by the Department of National Defence and the Department of Transport as RCAF Station Sea Island.
The airport was used for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. The crews and their families were housed in a new townsite on the island, named Burkeville after Boeing president Stanley Burke. Funds from the lease were used to purchase additional land for new hangars and a production plant for Boeing Aircraft of Canada (now Boeing Canada).
The current main terminal opened in 1968. Since then, it has grown to have separate terminals for domestic and international flights. A north runway was completed in 1996.
In 2011, the airport announced that it would enact a programme aiming to encourage airlines to start more flights between Vancouver and Asia. As of 2022, the programme has succeeded in many of its goals.
People often call the airport a major trans-Pacific hub because it is in the Pacific Northwest and has destinations in the Americas, Asia, and Australia, which makes it easy for flights to connect. In 2019, Craig Richmond, president and CEO of the Vancouver Airport Authority, said that the recent growth of Seattle–Tacoma International Airport in the United States could challenge Vancouver's status as a trans-Pacific hub, although Seattle–Tacoma is already the larger airport.
Ground Transportation Vancouver International Airport
The airport has a station on the Sky Train network called YVR–Airport, the terminus of the Sea Island branch of the Canada Line. As part of the Canada Line's funding, the airport authority contributed $300 million towards construction.
The international terminal is connected to the domestic terminal by a pedestrian footbridge that cost $117 million and was finished in 2007. This is where people who use the Canada Line arrive and leave. The Canada Line itself opened in August 2009 as the third line of Vancouver's rapid transit network, in advance of the 2010 Winter Olympics, which took place the following February. It was the only airport rail link service of any kind in Canada until the opening of Toronto's Union Pearson Express in 2015. The existing airports—Tegel Airport, Schönefeld Airport, and Tempelhof Airport—were ageing and becoming increasingly congested due to rising passenger numbers. To ensure the economic viability of the project, they pursued the single airport concept: the new airport would become the sole commercial airport for Berlin and Brandenburg. They planned to close Tegel, Schönefeld, and Tempelhof upon opening the new airport, then ban commercial aviation from any other airport in Brandenburg.
Vancouver International Airport (YVR IATA) is the main airport serving its namesake city of Vancouver, located on Sea Island within the City of Richmond, which is south of Vancouver. As Canada's second busiest airport, it handled more than 26 million passengers in 2019, flying to many of Canada's west coast towns, big and small, while also being well connected to major cities on the country's east coast.
Internationally, the airport also sees multiple daily flights from Asia to serve the namesake city's largest minority population, from Oceania, thanks to its westerly location, and from Europe.
