Art at Pudong Airport

Covering over 100 square meters at the north end of the Domestic Departure Hall in PVG Terminal 1, the Pudong Airport Art Gallery opened in December 2016 with an exhibition of 22 oil paintings by Xiao Gu, dean of the Shanghai Oil Painting Sculpture Institute. In June, the exhibits were updated with 25 new oil paintings by Yin Xiong. Additionally, the Maritime Exhibition—featuring sculptures, paper cuttings, paintings, and displays on traditional maritime folklore and the lives of coastal inhabitants and islanders of China—was launched at the end of 2016 through a collaboration between PVG and the China Maritime Museum.

If you have a layover of more than 7 hours, exploring Shanghai is a great way to pass the time. You can choose from several public transit options, including the high-speed Maglev train, metro, and buses, or hire a taxi. Travel to the city center typically takes up to 90 minutes one way.

• Visit the Shanghai Museum: Founded in 1952, the Shanghai Museum is a paradise for culture enthusiasts. It’s considered China’s most important museum of classical Chinese art. Highlights of its vast collection include ancient bronze works, ceramics, jade artifacts, traditional calligraphy, and ink drawings. The museum also showcases art from China’s ethnic minorities, as well as exquisite furnishings from the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368–1912). Don’t forget to visit the well-stocked gift shop for unique souvenirs.
• Visit the Jin Mao Tower and Skywalk: Shanghai is renowned for its iconic skyscrapers, and the Jin Mao Tower stands out as one of its most popular attractions. The highlight is the thrilling Skywalk—an open-air, glass-bottom walkway on the 88th floor, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city skyline. This massive observation deck can accommodate over 1,000 visitors at a time. At the base of the tower, you’ll also find a large shopping center featuring a variety of retail stores, restaurants, and entertainment options.
• Visit the Historic Longhua Temple and Pagoda: The magnificent Longhua Temple, nestled within a serene park in southwest Shanghai, is one of China’s oldest and most significant religious sites. Dating back over 1,700 years, this active Buddhist temple continues to host regular ceremonies and festivals. The complex features five impressive halls, including the Maitreya Hall (Mile Dian), which houses a grand statue of the Laughing Buddha, and the Heavenly King Hall (Tian Wang Dian), dedicated to the Four Heavenly Kings who guard the temple. The centerpiece, the Grand Hall of the Great Sage (Daxiong Baodian), showcases exquisite Buddhist statues and an ancient 16th-century bell. Nearby stands the iconic Longhua Pagoda, a striking multi-tiered structure that completes the temple’s timeless beauty.
• Take in the Exhilarating Views of Shanghai from The Oriental Pearl Tower: A must-visit landmark in Shanghai, the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower is located in Pudong Park on the east bank of the Huangpu River. This futuristic structure offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city skyline and the historic Bund promenade. The tower features 15 different viewing areas, including the famous Sightseeing Floor and Space City, where visitors can enjoy stunning vistas from various heights.
