Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) is the primary international gateway to Ethiopia, located in the Bole district, about 6 km (3.7 mi) southeast of Addis Ababa’s city center and 65 km (40 mi) north of Bishoftu. Formerly known as Haile Selassie I International Airport, it serves as the main hub for Ethiopian Airlines, connecting destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. The airport is also home to the Ethiopian Aviation Academy, supporting aviation training and development in the region.
As of June 2018, Addis Ababa Bole International Airport was handling nearly 450 flights per day, both departures and arrivals. In 2010, the Ethiopian Airports Enterprise announced a major expansion project valued at $27.9 million. The project aimed to increase the aircraft parking capacity from 19 to 44 stands, accommodating larger aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and Boeing 777. The first phase included the construction of 15 new parking stands, with the remaining stands to be completed in the second phase. This expansion was designed to ease air traffic congestion caused by a rise in international travel, leading to further development plans in 2012.
In 2012, the expansion of a new passenger terminal at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport was announced, with a projected investment of $250 million. Alongside this, a new ramp was completed, providing parking space for 24 aircraft, and construction began on another ramp that will accommodate an additional 14 aircraft. During this time, the first phase of expanding the taxiways and increasing aircraft parking capacity was also completed. These developments are part of a broader plan that will ultimately lead to the terminal’s expansion. All these improvements align with Ethiopian Airlines' strategic plan, known as "Vision 2025", which aims to position the airline and its hub as a leading aviation group in Africa.
