The history of Mary airport begins with its formation in 1968.In the same year, regular flights on the Ashgabat-Mary-Ashgabat route began on aircraft of the following types:

LI-2, IL-14, IL-18. One of the main aircraft that was used at the airport was the an-2. an-2 aircraft operated regular flights from Mary airport on regional routes.
