The idea of an airport in the province of Guanacaste was initially thought of during the government of Daniel Oduber Quirós (from 1974 to 1978) 2 . The airport was initially named Llano Grande, after the name of the region where it was built 2 . It is later named Aeropuerto Tomas Guardia, and the surname is only of ex-president Daniel Oduber Quirós , in honor of his work for the province of Guanacaste. However, most people call it Liberia Airport.In October 1995, the airport was promoted to the rank of international airport. To support the expansion of its activities, the runway surface was resurfaced and special landing lights were installed 2 . Furthermore, a fire brigade has been added to FAA and international regulations 3 standards . The initial response from commercial airlines to its opening was tepid; however, after one year of existence, the airport went from a single weekly charter flight to one almost every day 4 In 2006, to manage the increase in demand, the local government and local tourism chambers set aside funds to increase the capacity of the parking area from five to eight aircraft , and for the construction of a lane parallel circulation 5 . However, the government clarified that the solutions were only temporary and that a private company would have to be hired to develop and operate the airport in the future 5 . Also, in 2007, a new airport waiting room and counters were opened 6 , the airport's attendance was 180,000 visitors per year

New terminal and operator

The Government of Costa Rica has awarded a concession to CORIPORT, SA, for twenty years for the design, financing, construction and operation of a new terminal .

The new terminal , which encompasses approximately 23,000 m2 , features a contemporary design that increases both the efficiency and capacity of existing facilities . Construction began on October 19, 2010. The terminal opened on January 12

The airport is named in honor of the former president of Costa Rica, Daniel Oduber, who had the idea of building an airport in the region for the expansion and tourism development of Guanacaste. Opened in 1995, the airport operated its first flight to Florida that same year. Built on the Llano Grande plains in northern Costa Rica, Daniel Oduber International Airport, commonly known as Liberia International Airport, is one of four international airports in the country.In 2010, the airport handled nearly 443,585 passengers, an increase of 16% compared to 2009.Started in April 2010, construction work on a new terminal, covering 23,000 m2, was completed two years later, in January 2012.

Contemporary in structure, this international terminal, made up of two levels and 28 counters check-in, can accommodate 1,500 additional passengers per hour.Apart from domestic flights, the airport provides frequent connections between the United States and Canada.
