The airport was inaugurated in October 2021 as the country's new international airport for civil and commercial use. It was built at the facilities of the Soto Cano Air Base. History Of Comayagua International Airport
Comayagua International Airport, also known as Coronel Enrique Soto Cano Air Base, is located near Comayagua, Honduras. The airport has a rich history closely tied to military operations and international cooperation.
Originally established as an airfield in the 1930s, it served as a military installation during World War II.After the war, it continued its military role, primarily as a Honduran Air Force
base. In 1981, the airport gained international significance when it became home to a United States military-presence as part of a bilateral agreement between Honduras and the United States. During the 1980s, the airport played a key role in supporting U.S. military operations in Central America, particularly during the Contra War in Nicaragua. It served as a base for supplying and supporting U.S.-backed forces in the region.
In 1983, the airport was officially renamed Coronel Enrique Soto Cano Air Base in honor of a Honduran Air Force officer who died in a helicopter crash. Since then, it has continued to host both Honduran and U.S. military personnel and operations.
In addition to its military functions, Comayagua International Airport has also served as a civilian airport, providing limited commercial flights and supporting humanitarian missions and disaster relief efforts in Honduras and neighboring countries.
