Berlin Brandenburg Airport Assistance
International airport in Sch├Ânefeld, Germany
Address: Melli-Beese-Ring 1, 12529 Sch├Ânefeld, Germany
Berlin Brandenburg Airport is the only international airport in Berlin, which is the capital of Germany. Its IATA code, BER IATA, is what most people call it.It is located in Sch├Ânefeld in the namesake state of Brandenburg, just south of Berlin. It opened in late 2020 and is the third busiest airport in the country after Frankfurt and Munich. It sees frequent flights from all major European cities and several leisure destinations, as well as domestic services, but few long-haul connections. Berlin used to be served by Tegel Airport, which closed in 2020, and Sch├Ânefeld Airport, which was incorporated into BER.
History Berlin Brandenburg Airport
After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and German reunification in 1990, Berlin once again became the German federal capital. Leaders made plans to recognise the city's increased importance by constructing a large commercial airport. The existing airportsÔÇöTegel Airport, Sch├Ânefeld Airport, and Tempelhof AirportÔÇöwere ageing and becoming increasingly congested due to rising passenger numbers. To ensure the economic viability of the project, they pursued the single airport concept: the new airport would become the sole commercial airport for Berlin and Brandenburg. They planned to close Tegel, Sch├Ânefeld, and Tempelhof upon opening the new airport, then ban commercial aviation from any other airport in Brandenburg.
Overview Berlin Brandenburg Airport
Current and planned layout of the airport, November 2020 Berlin-Brandenburg Airport has two parallel runways. With a spacing of 1,900 metres (6,200 ft), this allows independent flight operations without interference from wake turbulence.
The northern runway of BER is the southern runway of the old Sch├Ânefeld Airport and has been in use since the 1960s. To adapt it for the new airport, it has been renovated and lengthened from 3,000 to 3,600 metres (9,800 to 12,000 ft). The newly built southern runway has a length of 4,000 metres (13,000 feet) and was officially commissioned on May 31, 2012. Blackouts of the runway beacon on the southern runway led to investigations concerning air traffic safety.
